What Is Temperament?

The inner man is composed of:

  • TEMPERAMENT: God-created and genetically coded in you at the time of your conception
  • CHARACTER: Learned behavior, affected by man and your environment
  • PERSONALITY: Self-selected by you and is a “mask”

Temperament is the genetic inborn part of you that determines how you react to people, places and things. Temperament pinpoints your perceptions of yourself and the people who love you. Temperament is not genetic in the sense that it is not passed through the genes and chromosomes of men and women. Your temperament contains your inborn qualities coded by a loving and wise Creator and these qualities make up your unique identity.

Your temperament consists of three areas:

(1) INCLUSION (MIND)–Inclusion is how you relate socially and your intellectual energies.

(2) CONTROL (WILL)– Control is your willingness to make decisions and to accept responsibility for self and/or others.

(3) AFFECTION (EMOTIONS)–Affection is the need to express and receive love, affection and approval. Need for deep personal relationships.

"When we know how God created us, we can use that information to help find solutions"

Using the information from your temperament analysis profile (called an APS), your counselor will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, and why you may be behaving/suffering in the manner you are. This identification process can reveal interpersonal and personal conflicts you may be experiencing in your life, as well as any unmet needs that can cause stress in your life and your relationships with others. When we know how God created us, we can use that information to help find solutions to bring about emotional health!
